The Infusion Drink: What Is It and How Does It Work?
There are a lot of different ways to make your favourite drink, and one of the most popular is infusion. In the past, infusions have been used to preserve food, but today we're here to talk about how you can use them for something a little more fun.
Infusion is the process of steeping one ingredient into another to bring out its flavour. You've probably heard of the word "infusion" before, but if you weren't sure what it meant, now you do! Infusion implies that something has been steeped in something else—like coffee beans in hot water or tea leaves in hot water.
Infusions are also used to make alcoholic drinks, like wine and beer. In these cases, the flavour is enhanced by adding fruit or herbs to a liquid base like water or grain alcohol.
The history of infusion dates back thousands of years. Some historians believe that the first infusions were created by accident when people stored their wine or beer in clay containers with fruit or herbs. Over time those flavours would mix with the alcohol and create something new! The earliest known use of infusion dates back to ancient Egypt, around 4000 BC. Egyptians would steep aromatic plants like mint leaves or chamomile flowers in hot water before drinking it as medicine or as part of their daily ritualistic practice.
Infusion is a simpler way to make alcoholic drinks, it is among the oldest methods for making flavourful alcohol, so the history of infusion is extensive and connecting people back to it's past. Of all other processes for making flavoured alcohol, no other method has as much of a charming history behind it.
